✦ Synopsis

The absolute N2 photoabsorption cross section is measured between the onset at 400.8 eV and 450 eV photon energy using synchrotron radiation. These absolute cross section data are in good agrtxment with recent czdculations using the multipIe-scatterin,c method and the Stieltjes-Tchebycheff procedure in the static exchange approximation.

Recently there has been both theoretical and experimental interest in

the K-absorption spectra of the first-row diatomic molecules (l-91 _ Speciai emphasis has been placed on the investigation of the K-absorption spectrum of the nitrogen molecule. Calculations of this spectrum have been made using the muhiplescattering method [l] (MSM) and the Stieftjes-Tchebycheff procedure in the static exchange approximation (2]_ Hitherto, measurements of the nitrogen K-absorption of N2 molecules were performed using synchrotron radiation and photographic registration [4] and electron energy loss (ELS) of 2.5 keV electrons [4--31. In both cases quantitative comparison of cross sections to calculated values of the photoabsorption cross section is problematic: for photo-* Present address: Berliner EIektronenspeicherringGeselh s&aft fiir Synchrotronstrahlung m.b.H.,
