โœฆ Synopsis

In addition to our previous report (see Vol. 3, nr. 5 of this Journal) focusing on Business and Government Applications, we now review contributions on Data Base and Information Systems. (San Jose, California), reviewed in an invited lecture the present sta.te of the art in relational data-base systems. After examining the original objectives for relational systems to see if they have been achieved, he discussed performance aspects and directions of additional research.

W. Frank King, III

The impact of structured data throughout computer-based information systems was discussed by another invited speaker, Charles W. Bachman (Billerica, Massachusetts). He showed that such data structures are to be found in database data, interprocess communication data and process-local data. Bachman strongly recommended the establishment, within programmatic data descriptions, alf a single approach to the declaration of data structures to be used for these kinds of data. He further recommended the establishment, within data manipulation languages, of three families of complementary statements for the access and manipulation of these three kinds of data. Finally, Mr. Bachman stated that such data should be supported with data independence facilities at each point when the programmatic view, the storage view or the
