✦ Synopsis

That old short term vs. long term argument T he subject of up-front equipment costs looms large in this month's issue. Ray Hardee's two-part opus on the economic impact of oversizing pumps concludes here, m~d Andrew Worley argues that, yes, sealless pumps may look more pricey initially, but over the long term, there are compelling reasons for choosing one on an economic basis alone. They're preaching to the converted in some ways, perhaps, but it's interesting to note from the article on India's burgeoning pump market, how initial expenditure plays so much part still in the purchasing decision. It's hardly an attitude that's limited to the developing world, of course. Time and again in life, we learmthat what appears easily come by initially, often turns out to be the millstone round our neck. But still we chase those phantom bargain deals. We'll continue therefore to clarify and highlight the arguments, and hope that it leads to more informed decisions on pump specification in some way.
