✦ Synopsis

of the factors which were previously thought to be unconnected. He has produced in addition a section on the action of gastrin. The review is exceptionally clear and presents to the reader an unusually easy opportunity of understanding this complex subject.

It is difficult to single out any of the short papers for special mention. There are thirty-two contributions in this meritorious group. The papers are without exception characterized by a feeling of enthusiasm tempered by authenticity and careful appraisal. They illustrate the forward surge in attempting to understand the physiological abnormalities underlying well-recognized diseases. Appropriately from Edinburgh contributors there are papers on gastric function, the Zollinger Ellison syndrome, and small-intestinal motility, all of which exemplify considerable maturation of thought in their respective fields. Shields's study of the effects of experimental intestinal obstruction is a model in its experimental design. Although many of the papers serve to illustrate the wide gap which exists between physiological knowledge and clinical application, the production of the Proceedings of this Symposium can only serve to stimulate further efforts in this field and to emphasize the importance of basic investigations. The many facets of the Proceedings of the Symposium have been ably moulded together in record time by Mr. Adam Smith, who has produced a book which no one interested in the gastro-intestinal tract should miss.
