Reaction of various diols with pyrrole in TFA/CH2CI 2 leads to formation of core modified expanded porphyrins.
## Abstract The synthesis and characterization of the first examples of singly and doubly fused expanded porphyrins, e.g. (III), and (V) containing dithienothiophene cores is presented.
Singlet and triplet excited state data on two new core-modified expanded porphyrins and their protonated derivatives are reported. Absorption spectral studies indicate a gradual red shift of the absorption bands upon sulfur substitution into the core. The singlet lifetimes for expanded S~3~-sapphyri
