✦ Synopsis

The diastereomeric ratios determined by GC-MS analysis and 'H N M R spectroscopy of the crude mixture (Table 1) are low, in accord with the suggested reaction sequence (Scheme 2). The relative configuration of the two stereocenters could not be determined. We assume from the mechanism, however, that the substituents of the major diastereoisoiner in 2-and 4-positions are trans to each other.
