✦ Synopsis

In a preliminary report Finkelstein et al. described a method for the estimation of free testosterone in the peripheral plasma from normal men and women. Plasma from men and virilized females contained significantly more testosterone than plasma obtained from normal women. Since the appearance of the preliminary communication, Oertel (2) has reported on a method for measuring testosterone levels in plasma and Oertel and Kaiser (3) have measured levels of this androgen in the plasma of young male subjects. The present communication records improvements in the method and testosterone values in a larger series of normal men and women, hirsute and virilized women, and the influence of ovariectomy, adrenalectomy, wedge resection, prednisone, and human chorionic gonadotropin on plasma testosterone.
