โฆ Synopsis
A practical and versatile spill mix has been developed for use on laboratory-scale spills of hazardous chemicals.
Editor's note: When it comes to the handling of small-scale spills, Canadian regulations seem to be way ahead of those in the United States. The procedures described in this article are permissible under Canadian regulations. In the United States, however, permits may be required for some operations.
In laboratories that use a wide variety of small quantities of hazardous chemicals, there is the potential for spills of these chemicals. Such spills can result in risk to workers' health from inhalation of fumes, and in the .............. ~rom slipping s. The objecis work were to develop a practical method of handling reduce these risks and to provide an 'ironmentaly acceptable aeans of dis-Lhe residues. )rtant aspect ling spills is ble to react o lessen the impact of the spill. We wanted to have a "spill mix" that is easily prepared and inexpensive, so that it is possible to have containers of the mix wherever hazardous chemicals are being used. We have been able to apply the experience from our work on the disposal of hazardous chemicals (1-6) to the disposal of the spilled materials.
