โœฆ Synopsis

Gel permeation chromatograph molecular weight calibrations have been obtained for polystyrene, polyethylene, and polyisoprene in o-dichlorobenzene at 135'. The experimental curves for polyethylene and polyisoprene were in good agreement with curves predicted from the polystyrene molecular weight calibration using the unperturbed dimensions of a chain as the universal calibration parameter. With the assumption that unperturbed dimensions can be taken as the universal parameter, a simple relation is derived and can be used to predict if a polystyrene extended chain length calibration is valid for a particular polymer. Thus, an extended chain length calibration for polyethylene is expected to be simi!ar to one for polyisoprene but different from one for polystyrene. These postulated trends were confirmed experimentally. Calibration data previously reported for polystyrene, poly-(methyl methacvlate), and poly(dimethy1 siloxane) in chloroform give a single extended chain length calibration. This finding also confirms the relation between unperturbed dimensions and extended chain length.

A combination of the universal calibration method, with direct calibration with several otigomers of known molecular weight, gave excellent results in the determination of the average molecular weights and molecular weight distribution for bisphenol A type polycarbonate.
