Ahmad Mulloy è un ragazzo diciottenne che vive a New Perspect, nel New Jersey. Sua madre è americana di origine irlandese e suo padre, sparito ormai da molti anni, era invece egiziano. Ahmad cresce praticamente da solo, in una societ di cui riconosce ogni giorno di più i limiti e la superficialit . È un ragazzo serio e intelligente, ma si trova sempre più isolato nel mondo in cui deve crescere, incapace di entrare in contatto con i suoi coetanei, ragazzi e ragazze alienati, preda di false immagini di felicit , privi di qualsiasi valore guida. E nemmeno i professori riescono a convincerlo: Ahmad si sente respinto e comincia a giudicare, impietoso, un mondo di cui avverte il declino inesorabile. Ecco perché si avvicina, con la sua seriet e la sua fiducia, al Corano e all'imam della sua cittadina, lasciandosi convincere a lasciare gli studi per diventare un autista di camion. Ed è su un grande camion che il giovane Ahmad, lentamente plagiato dal religioso cui si è affidato, concepisce il progetto che deve porre fine ai suoi giorni: far saltare in aria il Lincoln Tunnel di New York.
