โฆ Synopsis
The effects of adding modified polypropylenes, one functionalized with maleic anhydride (PPmal) and the other with acrylic (PPacr) acid, to blends of nylon 12 (Nyl2) and polypropylene (PP) were studied by considering morphological, thermal, rheological and mechanical properties.
The thermal results indicate that both modified polypropylenes only act on the crystallization behaviour of the PP, causing different shifts of the peaks and lowering the crystallization enthalpy. The differences between the two modified PPs also correspond to differences in the morphology, more specifically one barely observes the existence of a second phase when PPmal is added. The mechanical properties follow well from the above: in tensile measurements the yielding phenomenon is observed again in the case of added PPmal and some enhancement in the stress at the break is measured. Large differences are also seen from the rheological results, especially when reported in the form of Cole~Cole plots: again indications of a mostly homogeneous structure may be drawn for the case of added PPmal.
