โœฆ Synopsis


The ternary Zintl compound europium tin antimonide, EuSn 3 Sb 4 , has been synthesized at 9003C in the presence of a tin 6ux, and its structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray di4raction methods. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group D 16 2h -Pnma with a โ€ซุโ€ฌ 9.954(2), b โ€ซุโ€ฌ 4.3516(7), c โ€ซุโ€ฌ 22.650(4) A > , and Z โ€ซุโ€ฌ 4 at 223C. EuSn 3 Sb 4 is isostructural to SrSn 3 Sb 4 ; it possesses channels de5ned by an anionic framework of shared SnSb 4 tetrahedra, SnSb 3 trigonal pyramids, and Sb+Sb zigzag chains, and it is 5lled by Eu 2ุ‰ cations. Resistivity measurements indicate weakly metallic behavior for ASn 3 Sb 4 (A โ€ซุโ€ฌ Eu, Sr) and the structurally related Ba 2 Sn 3 Sb 6 . The anisotropic metallic nature of these compounds is explained through extended HuK ckel band structure calculations.
