Abstract
We studied the design and characterization of an optically controlled terahertz (THz) wave modulator based on silicon photonic crystal slab, which is made from a high‐resistivity Si with triangular lattice and a line defect formed by removing a single row of air holes along Γ‐K direction. A modulated semiconductor laser with 808‐nm wavelength is used to illuminate the line defect of the photonic crystal. The interaction between the bandgap shift and THz wave is strengthened and yields an appreciable modulation of the THz output beam for optical pump. Experimental results show that the presented THz wave modulator has modulation speed of 0.8 Kb/s by modulated semiconductor laser excitation 150‐mw average power at 808 nm. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
