β¦ Synopsis
Temporary Magnetism of Nickel. 419 Pre-historic Flax.--Prof. Heer has found that the flax which was cultivated by the inhabitants of the lake dwellings is of a different species from that which is now raised. It had smaller seeds and sent numerous stalks from the ground, while the variety which is now cultivated has only a single stem.--Fortsoh, der Zeit.

Wear of Materials.--M. Lavoinne commends the St. Louis experiments which are described in the Mayor's message for 1878. Although they are too few to furnish practical results of great value, the principle is good and the mode of experimenting is so easy that it is desirable to use similar apparatus elsewhere for similar researches.--Ann, de~ Ponts. et Chauss.
