โฆ Synopsis
The purpose of this research is to investigate climatic fluctuations connected with the cycles of the lunar year. The rainfall data belonging to the Balcombe station, Sussex, England, are used. From these data, variations in the frequency per year of daily rainfalls over 25 mm, which in this research are called daily rainbursts, are investigated, and the results show that there is a quasi-regular fluctuation, connected with the cycles of the moon, in the number of daily rainbursts. KEY WORDS Climatic fluctuations * The validity of this statistical test has been questioned. For criticisms of this test see Bliss, (1967-70) or Snedecor and Cochran (1967).
* Exclusion of the highest figure for each set of data, because the greatest fall was far in excess of the remainder of the annual maxima in the series (e.g. the largest fall between 1935 and 1952 was 86.6mm; however the next longest was 49.3). This procedure has been followed by many workers, for example Rodda (1967) and Potts and Mann (1971).
