Il centro di interesse di questo romanzo è... un manoscritto. Esso raccoglie le memorie di un vecchio gentiluomo inglese condite da notizie piccanti, particolari scandalistici su eminenti personalità politiche, aneddoti che i protagonisti hanno ogni interesse a mantenere segretissimi.
La notizia che il documento compromettente sarà pubblicato suscita il panico; ne derivano molti casi curiosi e vicende divertenti che il Wodehouse narra con abilità di scrittore di “gialli”; la soluzione è inattesa e non è il caso di raccontarla ora.
Basti osservare che la vena di schietto umorismo che anima il racconto non permette di abbandonarsi interamente alla suggestione della suspense per cui la lettura risulta in ogni caso riposante e induce veramente al buon umore.
Anche qui, come in tutte le sue opere migliori, Wodehouse riesce a farci accettare, quasi come naturali, le situazioni più strampalate ed assurde e le vicende più paradossali e grottesche: merito dell’humour sottile e della ottimistica bonomia che, anche in questo romanzo, sono i veri protagonisti.
