✦ Synopsis
In recent years we have investigated the syntheses, structures, and properties of a variety of copper-chalcogen clusters. [1] The general synthetic route to these species involves the reaction of CuX (X = halide, carboxylate) salts with tertiary phosphanes and subsequent reaction with trimethylsilyl chalcogenides. Recently, we have started to investigate the reactivity of copper alkoxides with trimethylsilyl chalcogen derivatives. A new feature of using alkoxides instead of copper(i) halides is the solubility and reactivity of the starting materials in organic solvents in the absence of tertiary phosphanes. These fundamentally different reaction conditions could thus give rise to a range of novel copper complexes.
In the course of these investigations we attempted to prepare CuOtBu using an alternative procedure to the ones reported by Weiss et al. and Saegusa et al. [2] Our reaction of KOtBu with copper(i) chloride in THF at room temperature afforded a dark green solution together with a red precipitate.
