β¦ Synopsis
It is suggested that the hitherto unexplained drastic temperature, pressure and external deuterium isotope effects on the phosphorescence decay-rate constant (kr) of naphthalene in a single crystal of durene can be consistently explained in terms of the photoinduced hydrogen-abstraction reaction of triplet naphthalene from durene in which tunneling plays an essential role. This suggestion is supported by calculations based on the "golden rule" approach to tunneling developed by Siebrand, Wildman and Zgicrski.
