✦ Synopsis
Polycrystalline samples of HgBa 2 CuO 4þd , one underdoped with T c ¼ 84 K, one optimally doped with T c ¼ 91 K and one overdoped with T c ¼ 54 K, were prepared at 800 C in sealed silica tube under controlled partial pressures of O 2 pðO 2 Þ and Hg pðHgÞ in three-zone furnance. Critical temperature T c was adjusted by varying pðO 2 Þ or by post-annealling. The infrared spectra were investigated in the frequency range from 25 to 8000 cm À1 and temperature range from 5 to 300 K. The infrared spectra of polycrystalline HgBa 2 CuO 4þd show five peaks at 86, 150, 358, 596 and 621 cm À1 . Details of mode assignments are discussed.

The effect of Tl substitution for Hg in the Hg-Ba-Cu-O system has been investigated for a wide substitution range. A single-layer system was maintained until 50% of Tl substitution, and above 50%, a double-layer system was observed. Tl substitution brought about an overdoping state in the CuO 2 plan
