✦ Synopsis

The average rate of mtersystem crossmg from the lowest tnplet state to the ground state increases by a factor of approxunately 2.5 between 2 K and 77 K for tetraphenylchlorin and tetraphenyIchlonn-dr. This observation is discussed interms of radiatronless-transttlon theory. It is also found that, contrary to the case for aromatic hydrocarbons, the positiou dependence of the deuterium isotope effect for the several chlorms studied does not correlate with the predicted onecenter a-electron densthes m the highest Wed and lowest untilled molecular orbrtals.
