of fire-control systems, for example, are similar to those employed in the complex switching mechanisms which underlie the dial system of the modern telephone network. Many of the components of the intricate computer which is the heart of the fire-control system--switches, relays, vacuum tubes and wave guides--as well as some of the circuits, are also found in the telephone system. The close association between the Laboratories and Western Electric in the Bell System for many years also provides an ideal working arrangement for ensuring complete coordination between research and development on the one hand and manufacturing on the other, in putting these new and highly complex fire-control systems in production.
