โฆ Synopsis
The last five Stops on the above list were nmde with the valve so adjusted as to be opened by a brake-block fi'iction which wouhl not produce skidding even on a wet rail, while in all other cases it was so 'adjusted as to product the greatest amount of retardation on a dry rail. The action of the valve was such as to render it apl)arent thav its employment in ordinary traffic, when perfected tbr this purpose, would be of great practical utility. The air was heard to e~alre continually, and the valve was highly sensitive. If an appliance of this kind, so simple in its construction and so c~rtain in its operation, were attached to every vehicle, and were so set ,'~s to open before the adhesion attainable on a wet rail was exceeded, it would beconm immaterial whether the driver maintained only a certain pressure for a oertain speed, or whether he carel~sly applied his brake with a high pressure when running at a low speed. The valves, already adjusted for the required amount of retardation, would act of their own accord, and would only allow the proper degree of pressure to be exerted by the brake-blocks. The stops would then always be nmde within given distances for given rates of speed.--L'o,n. *
Telegraphing to Running Tl'alns.--C. M. Gariel describes the successful working of Baillehache's invention for signalling to and from trains in motion, on a part of the line which connects the Champs de Mars with the station at Grenelle. The exl)eriments were ~ sn(,-(~,sfnl that they are likely soon to be repcated on a mut'h larger ~ah,.
