โฆ Synopsis
To remain competitive, engineering organisations have to continually improve the design of their products, their processes, and the materials used in their manufacture. For small to medium sized enterprises, this can be prohibitively expensive and cutting back on development activities can affect their long-term viability. A way forward is to make use of technology developed by others. However, locating and applying the most appropriate technology can be difficult. This paper discusses the issues involved, with a particular emphasis on the joining of materials, and suggests the basis of a way of improving the technology transfer process.

Material selection for mechanical designs is an important task. Different approaches have been proposed to fulfill this job, so far. However, most of them work well with only quantitatively measurable properties of materials. Also, due to a wide range of materials available, the selection space find
