โœฆ Synopsis

The accurate measurement of water vapor sorption and permeation in polymers is complicated because water has a tendency to adsorb on high energy surfaces, a relatively high heat of vaporization, and a high solubility in most polymers. These issues and the difficulties they cause in the design of sorption and permeation equipment are reviewed. Some new approaches to circumvent these problems are described. Data for bisphenol A polysulfone films are used to illustrate these approaches. 0

A novel method for measuring the permeation of water vapor through polymer films is described. A cellulose detector film incorporating cobalt chloride in a blue anhydrous form is sealed between two pieces of test film in a specially designed cell. The cell is placed in a controlled temperature and h

A solvatochromic method was used to characterize the water sorption behavior of polymer films. Four different dyes were dissolved in various solid polymers and the relative water vapor pressure in the atmosphere was changed. Evaluated solvatochromic parameters depended not only on the amount of sorb

The sorption and diffusion of water vapor in poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film were measured by applying a thermogravimetric analyzer (TG-DTA), which customarily has been used to detect the weight loss of a sample with the increase of temperature under a given atmosphere. In this case, we dete

The sorption and transport of water in nylon 6,6 films as functions of the relative humidity (RH) and temperature were studied. Moisture-sorption isotherms determined gravimetrically at 25, 35, and 45ยฐC were described accurately by the GAB equation. Water-vapor transmission rates were enhanced above
