When preparing ESL students for college composition, my goals are always for students to react and respond critically, and evaluate what they read and see. In their essays, students must establish a sufficiently narrow thesis and support that thesis with good, logically organized, specific detail. I want them to read widely, summarize and synthesize others' opinions, and weave them seamlessly into their own prose. Students need to research effectively and cite properly. I want to argue here that we can help students accomplish these goals by having them watch and discuss feature films and write reviews.
