✦ Synopsis

This article describes the curriculum for a course on counseling and spirituality. The author details elements of the course, methods to facilitate interaction, and skills to be gained by counselors taking the course.

Spirituality has frequently been addressed in counselor education under the topic of wellness (Chandler, Holden. & Kolander, 1992; Kelly, 1994; Witmer & Sweeney, 1992). Recently, the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC) sponsored a summit to explore the role of spirituality in counseling (ASERVIC Work Group, 1995). Also, the inclusion of spiritual and religious problems in the psychiatric diagnostic nosology (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) supports exploring spirituality as a relevant topic in all mental health professions.

In addition to wellness, spirituality in counselor education has been explored through the topic of religious beliefs and values. Kelly (1994) surveyed counselor education programs listed in the Hollis and Wantz ( 1990) program directory and reported that only one fourth of the programs surveyed included a component in their programs that addressed spiritual and religious issues. Pate and High (1995) followed up Kelly's study by examining the importance of client religious beliefs and practices in programs approved by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). They found that 84% of CACREPapproved counselor education programs noted client religious beliefs to be of "some importance," but only 16% of the respondents noted that those beliefs were of "more than some importance." Pate and High concluded that counselor educators needed to take the lead concerning the place of religious beliefs and values in counselor education. This article describes a course in counselor education titled Counseling and Spirituality. This elective course, for master's
