Abstract

A patient with Type 2 diabetes (NIDDM) sustained a partial thickness bum to her hand from a hot tea cup. She was not aware of the injury by virtue of her hitherto unrecognised asymptomatic upper limb sensory neuropathy, or even that damage could be sustained so simply from an everyday activity. Patients with diabetes may need to select their tea cups more carefully, and those caring for patients with diabetes should recognise and educate on sensory impairment in the hands as well as the feet.
