Within the period from 1963 to 1972, 171 children --aged 14 days to 5 years killed by accidents were received in the Forensic Institute of Hamburg. 53 cases were traffic accidents and 118 case~ were classified as domestic accidents, because they appeared as consequences of negligence in supervision of the children. The cause of the accidents was in some eases unpredictable activity of the child, in other cases some grave errors of the adults. The greatest number of the accidents, however, appeared with a typical behaviour pattern of the children within some dangerous situations tolerated, or neglected by the adults. Causes for these faults were the abuse of alcohol or drugs, inadequate living conditions over stress or a lack of experience of the parents.
