Scalds

any young children are accidentally scalded by hot M liquids, the most common being the spillage of a beverage from a cup or mug. Fewer children are scalded by tap water although the scalds are frequently more extensive and more likely to resuIt in hospital admission and subsequent disability.

Scalds may be the result of child abuse and neglect and in tap water scalds the proportion due to abuse or neglect is generally considered to be higher than with other types of scald injury. This is reflected in the findings of several studies summarized in Table 1.
