✦ Synopsis

Prior to Mao Tse-tung and the Communist takeover in 1949, there were some five million practicing Taoists in China. However, over the subsequent three decades many Taoists were subjected to forced labor and torture, and were even murdered. By the 1980s, Taoism was thought to have been eradicated in China, but thanks to today’s more liberal government, Taoism is again flourishing.
