✦ Synopsis

When this journal was initiated in 1968, there were only hints of the important applications of tandem mass spectrometry that are so well recognized today. It appears particularly appropriate to review briefly this develop ment when celebrating the silver anniversary of the first mass spectrometry journal.

An outstanding scientific journal requires perceptive and conscientious editorial oversight, a responsible and supportive publisher, and scientific subject matter that continuously generates important and exciting research. This paper, while applauding the first two, attempts to illustrate the last by sketching the growth of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) since this journal's founding in 1968. Table 1 summarizes the number of MS/MS papers published in Organic Mass Spectrometry during that period.
