✦ Synopsis

Ceratozamia is one of the ten genera still surviving of Cycads, a relict group of morphologically primitive gymnosperms, typical of the Mesozoic era. Two species under study, i.e. Ceratozamia kuesteriana and C. fuscoviridis, show a transitory red-brown coloration of the young leaflets, which is due to the presence in the photosynthetic tissue of a mixture of several ketocarotenoids. Three seco-carotenoids representing the major components of the mixture, i.e. the very rare semi-/?carotenone (1) and triphasiaxanthin (2) and the novel 5hydroxy-5,6-seco-/?,/?-caroten-6-one, which we now name ceratoxanthin (3) (Scheme l), have already been fully
