✦ Synopsis

Mathematical Models of Metabolic Regulation is a collection of papers delivered in 1974 during the 9th annual meeting of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies. The volume, edited by T. Keleti and S. Lakatos of the Enzymology Department, Institute of Biochemistry, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, is divided into three sections representing increasingly complex hierarchical levels of biological control. The first section is about individual enzymes, the second deals with multi-enzyme systems, and the third with cells and organisms. The common theme connecting these three sections is mathematical modelling.

The volume begins, appropriately, with a chapter about statistical problems that arise in the analysis of enzyme kinetic data. This chapter comprises a brief review of methods of estimating Michaelis constants and maximum velocities. However the real statistical problems modern enzymologists face finding suitable methods for estimating initial rates objectively, fitting data with error in both variables, fitting data to non-Michaelian rate laws, using experimental results to design better experiments, etc.--are not treated at all in this chapter.

Perhaps a summary commentary on the remainder of this collection of papers is that one of the principle points made in the first chapter (i.e. the advisability of using v versus v/s rather than
