✦ Synopsis

The appeal of the book is greatly increased by the systematic comparison of the theory behind the three culture methods used. As every book. this one is not free of errors and inconsistencies. I will only name some discrepancy between approximations and data as in Figs. 2. I .3 and 3.5.5, not very appropriate use of statistics as the use of chi? test for a small sample, nonsymmetrical confidence intervals as in Fig. 4.2.9 and missing explanations as for the dependence of the yield on D on p. 48.

The book is an excellent contribution to plankton ecology, showing both the strengths and drawbacks of the experimental approaches based on continuous cultures. It is to be recommended to all plankton ecologists. General ecology may also profit from the contributions to dynamics, regulation principles and competition theory.
