-A new synthesis of 1:2,5:4-ctibenzfluorene (X) is This synthesis involves the following steps : a) condensation of 2-lithium-biphenyl (thc corresponding organomagnesium derivative gave less satisfactory results) with a-indanone and dehydration of the resulting carbinol H ith anhydrous potassium hydrogen sulfate to 2 (l'-indeno) biphenyl (VIII). Yield : 29 yo.

b) cyclisation of the unsaturated liydrocarbori (VIII) by treatment, first with perplithalic acid (performic acid gave erratic results) and than with 34 yo HBr in acetic acid (Brsdsher's method). Yield : 8 76.

This type of synthesis could be used for the preparation of benzfluorenes possessing a phenanthrene system.

In the course of these experiments 1 (Q'-fluoryl) spiro-indarie ( X I ) was isolated tis a by product. described.

Poursuivant nos travaux dans le domaine des polybenzofluorenes (l), nous avons cherche A mettre au point une synthese pouvant s'appliquer a la prkparation des 1:2, 3:4, 5:6-tribenzo-et 1 :2,3:4,5:6,7:8-tktrabenzofluorene.s encore inconnus. Ces deux hydrocarbures peuvent &tre consider& comme des derives du phenanthrene substitue en 9 : 10; la prkparation de produits de ce type a k t k rkalisee a partir tles dlrivls tlu diphhyle substituk en 2 par un glycol (I).
