✦ Synopsis
can lead to oriented domains and/or antiphase boundaries. High resolution electron microscopic investigations will help us elucidate these features.
Finally, numerous crystals exhibit both phenomena simultaneously (Fig. 5c); microtwins can then appear in only one of the crystal domains (domain 11). Moreover, the microtwins are not observed anymore for the non-superconducting tetragonal phase LaBa,Cu,O,-,, obtained from a different thermal treatment (quenched sample). This is to be compared with the absence of twinning domains for the tetragonal non-superconducting phase YBa,Cu,O, 51'2,20-231.
The preliminary electron microscopy investigations of the superconductor LaBazCu30,, thus show that this oxide is characterized, like YBa2Cu307-,, by the presence of numerous domains, in spite of its apparent tetragonal symmetry deduced from X-ray observation. Indeed, it appears that two sorts of crystals exist in the bulk of the superconducting oxide LaBa,Cu,O, ,: rigorous tetragonal crystals and distorted, presumably orthorhombic crystals which exhibit microtwins. This deviation from tetragonal symmetry observed for many crystals which could not be observed by X-ray powder diffraction is most informative: both phenomena-structural distortion and superconductivitycould be closely related.
