✦ Synopsis

An intertheory synthesis relation is introduced in abstract semantical (i.e., model-theoretic) terms and analysed with regard to basic properties of unified theories in the empirical sciences. The concept of parametrised laws is defined with reference to the number of pairwise ditlerent, bound variables occurring in (formal representations of) generalised empirical hypotheses. Parametrisation of the empirical axioms of two or more theories is shown to be an instance of intertheory synthesis. A final example of parametrised laws drawn from solid state physics substantiates the present formal approach. A more complete example of synthesis of theories through parameterisation of laws selected from neo-Darwinian synthetic theory will be treated in Part II of this investigation (forthcoming).

The paper presents an example of unified theory bearing interest from both a historical and systematic point of view. The example is chosen from evolutionary population genetics (neo-Darwinian synthetic theory). It exhibits various aspects of theoretical change in science that have been shown in Par
