✦ Synopsis
aujaceni ~noiecuie oi I . I nis close approacn 01 iwo molecules of 1 is shown in Figure 3. The three benzene solvent molecules in 1, however, do not adopt positions that place their flat surfaces in contact with the C,, unit. These benzene molecules are merely occupying what would otherwise be voids within the solid.
In summary, a double addition product of C,, has been structurally characterized. Because of potential differences in the chemical reactivity of the eight discrete bond types in C,, , it may be easier to characterize multiple addition products for C,, than for C,, .
Experimental Procedure
A yellow solution of 84 mg (0.16 mmol) of [Ir(CO)CI(PMe,Ph),] in 0.5 mL of benzene was added to a reddish brown solution of 20 mg (0.024 mmol) of C,, in 12 mL of benzene. The resulting solution was thoroughly mixed and then allowed to stand undisturbed for four days. The black, crystalline product was collected by filtration and washed with benzene and ethyl ether. Yield: 30 mg, 60% based on C,,.
