The total syntheses of the ladybug defensive agents (+)-hippodamine, (5)-convergine, (k)-hippocasine, and (*)-hippocasine oxide are described starting from perhydroboraphenalene. A number of tricyclic alkaloids have been isolated from various ladybug species.' Among these canpounds are hippodamine ,(L) and its hydrated N-oxide convergine (z), present in Hippodamia convergens,* Anisosticta 1g-punctata,3 and H caseyi.
