Spontaneous copolymerizations of the cyclobutane adducts of strong donor olefins and strong acceptor olefins, I,l,2,2-tetracyano-3-ethoxycyclobutane (la) and dimethyl 2,2-dicyano-3ethoxycyclobutane-l,l-dicarboxylate (lb), with 2-oxazolines (2) are described. In the reaction of lb with 2-methyloxazoline (2b), the alternating copolymer of lb and 2b, the I:1:1 periodic terpolymer of dimethyl I,I-dicyanoethylene-2,2-dicarboxylate, vinyl ether, and 2b, was obtained. Cyclobutane la also reacted with 2b to yield copolymer rich in la © 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd. 3 was obtained in 45% yield (see, Scheme I). • No reaction.
