✦ Synopsis

Attempts to prepare some N-dialkylaminoalkyl-4-alkoxy-and 4-aryloxy-2-pyridones by oxidation of N-dialkylaminoalkyl-4-alkoxy-and 4-aryloxy-pyridinium halides with potassium ferricyanide in alkaline solution resulted instead in the formation of N-dialkylaminoalkyl-4-pyridones as a result of cleavage of the 4-alkoxy or 4-aryloxy group under the alkaline conditions used. The N-dialkylaminoalkyl-4-pyridones formed the dihydrochloride salt with HCI and the monosubstituted quaternary ammonium compounds with reactive alkyl halides.
