Hydrogenolysis of azides using hydrogen over 5% palladium-on-charcoal at atmospheric pressure has provided a method for the preparation of symmetrical secondary amines by a reductive dimerization process. In this process, the azide carbons of two azides become attached to an amino nitrogen with concurrent expulsion of five nitrogen atoms.
