✦ Synopsis
Oxide pyrochlores of the formula (A_{2} B B^{\prime} \mathrm{O}{7}\left(A=\mathrm{La}, \mathrm{Nd} ; B B^{\prime}=\mathrm{Pb}, \mathrm{Sn}, \mathrm{Bi}\right)) have been synthesized by a low-temperature ambient-pressure route employing (\mathrm{KOH}) melts. All the compositions, including (\mathrm{La}{2} \mathrm{Bi}{2} \mathrm{O}{7}) and its strontium-substituted derivatives, (\mathrm{La}{2-x} \mathrm{Sr}{x} \mathrm{Bi}{2} \mathrm{O}{7-\delta}), are deeply colored insulators, confirming that a metallic ground state is not achieved for (\mathrm{Pb}(\mathrm{IV})) and (\mathrm{Bi}(\mathrm{IV} / \mathrm{V})) oxides with the pyrochlore structure. 1993 Academic Press, Inc.
