## Abstract New and shorter routes to the benzothieno[3,2‐__b__]pyridine‐3‐carbonitrile and benzofuro[3,2‐__b__]pyridine‐3‐carbonitrile ring systems are reported. These heterocycles may function as new templates for kinase inhibitors.
