✦ Synopsis

An efficient Friedel-Crafts alkylation of aromatic compounds with ethyl a-chloro-a-(ethylthio)acetate catalysed by ytterbium triflate, followed by desulfurisation of the product provides a convenient methodology for the synthesis of ethyl arylacetates of aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds.
