✦ Synopsis

We describe the results of our investigation on the preparation, structural characterization, and optical properties of a spiro-annulated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon prepared by the cyclodehydrogenation of a hexa{2-(9,9 0 -spirobifluorenyl)}benzene precursor molecule. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the anthracene backbone adopts one of the largest end-to-end twists thus far reported.

A modified Finnigan MAT ion-trap detector has been employed in a systematic examination of the collisional dissociation of the cations of selected 2-and 3-dimensional polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) with a carbon content ranging from 10 to 24 carbon atoms: naphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaph
