✦ Synopsis

Dioxo-6-(2-pyridyl)methylenepenicillanic acid (6) was prepared and found to be a potent p-lactamase inhibitor. Its reaction with sodium methoxide was studied to provide insight into its mechanism of enzyme inactivation.
