A novel carbinolammonium chloride has been synthesized as a possible intermediate in the biosynthetic conversion of the 13-methylprotoberberine alkaloid (+)-tetrahydrocorysamine to the benzophenanthridine alkaloids (+)-corynoline, (+)-14-epicorynoline, and the Bsecoprotoberberine alkaloid (+)-corydalic acid methyl ester.
