Solid solutions of Mg 1؊x Cu 2؉x O 3 were prepared at 9503C for 12 h in air with a narrow composition range of x from 0.130 to 0.166. Thermal analysis revealed that the sample of x ؍ 0.143 decomposed into MgO and Cu 2 O above 10303C. The stoichiometric oxygen content based on Cu II valence was con

✦ Synopsis
Substitution of Pb for Bi in the recently characterized mixedvalence lead+platinum oxide PbPt 2 O 4 was attempted and a Pb 1؊x Bi x Pt 2 O 4 solid solution was obtained for 04x40.3. Powder X-ray di4raction study showed that all substituted compounds crystallize with similar triclinic unit cell and PbPt 2 O 4 lattice parameters. The structural model of Pb 0.7 Bi 0.3 Pt 2 O 4 was re5ned from powder X-ray di4raction data using the Rietveld method and the results indicate the same crystal structure than PbPt 2 O 4 with one mixed Pb/Bi atomic site. Neutron di4raction realized on the two limit compositions of the solid solution (x ؍ 0 and 0.3) allowed to con5rm the PbPt 2 O 4 and Pb 0.7 Bi 0.3 Pt 2 O 4 stoichiometries. Mean oxidation degree of Pt atoms in the [PtO 4 ] in5nite chains decreases from ؉ 3 for PbPt 2 O 4 to ؉ 2.7 for Pb 0.7 Bi 0.3 Pt 2 O 4 . Conductivity measurements show a metallic behavior for all the compositions except the limit composition x ؍ 0.3 for which a semiconducting behavior appears. 2002 Elsevier Science (USA)
