✦ Synopsis


A new type of hybrid material of clay with poly (butyl acrylate) (PBA) has been prepared successfully using intercalation-polymerization process. The structure of the composite was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results show that the hybrid material prepared has a decomposition central temperature of 485.6Β°C, 83Β°C higher than that of pure PBA (402.0Β°C).

Polystyrene-clay hybrids (PSCHs) were prepared by melt blending a styrene vinyloxazoline copolymer with organophilic clay. In the PSCHs, the silicate layers of the clay were delaminated and dispersed homogeneously to the nanometer level. The moduli of the PSCHs were higher than that of the PS copoly
